This project will feature personalized poetry written and performed by local poets curated by Marshall James Kavanaugh in partnership with La Pearl Beauty Emporium. Attendees can give a topic, word, or idea to each poet and receive a one-of-a-kind typewritten poem to take home with them. Join us for these poetry pop-ups outside La Pearl Beauty Emporium on the following dates: Wednesday, August 18 at 4-6pm (rain date: Thursday, August 19) with Philadelphia Youth Poet Laureate Cydney Brown and Lindo Yes! Sunday, August 29 at 3-5pm (rain date: Sunday, September 5) with Alex Smith and Carlos José Pérez Sáman Wednesday, September 8 at 4-6pm (rain date: Thursday, September 9) with Jeannine A. Cook and Christopher K.P. Brown Wednesday, October 13 at 4-6pm (rain date: Thursday, October 14) with Quentin The Poet and Cashmere Harper |
We’re giving the neighborhood a voice through poetry! Participants will be prompted to write down the neighborhood's living history and envision its future, either in poetic form or in personal narrative. The final text will be published in digital and print format, for further reflection. Follow along on our instagram to see what your neighbors are writing: @westphillycommunitypoem
Poets and non-poets, young and old, alike are encouraged to take this space to heal and find their voice in the community!
In addition, join us for the finale of this event series
on Wednesday, October 27 at 7pm at The Bank (3750 Lancaster Avenue)
The West Philly Community Poem in its entirety will be recited with live music and spoken word performances performed by local community members who participated throughout the three month series.
Barnes West conceived Everyday Places Artist Partnerships to provide West Philadelphia residents with spaces to engage with multidisciplinary artistic projects that offer inspiration and promote hope and healing. The selected artists will partner with neighborhood businesses and sites—including grocery stores, restaurants, laundromats, public parks, and community organizations—to build interactive, participatory projects that engage with the site and residents. The projects will continue through November. Barnes West is an initiative created by The Barnes Foundation and People’s Emergency Center Community Development Corporation.
Additional support for performances at the West Philly Community Poem has been provided by the City of Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy through their Arts In Action Initiative.

Hosted by Joseph Jablonski, Winchester's own "Walking Mall Poet," this panel—including fellow poets Benjamin Aleshire, Marshall James Kavanaugh, Mithilda-Anne Florence, and Brian Sonia-Wallace—will explore some of the leading North American voices of street poets. Existing in the space between performance and publishing, street poets write at events or in public spaces using typewriters to create on-the-spot personalized commissions. They will discuss the creative process behind their work, current projects and collections, the writing machines behind the creators, and how a busking art proceeds in a post-COVID world. They will also be reading (and even creating) some handcrafted poetry.

Currents New Media Festival 2018 in Santa Fe
Join Marshall James Kavanaugh and Anthony Carson in their pop-up dream bazaar alongside the opening weekend of the 2018 Currents New Media Festival. They’ll be taking all requests for the surreal and unfathomable. Dive deep into the caverns of forgotten dreams with these two dream laborers and you may just find yourself in a mountainous Neverland where unicorns are real and typewriters have been redubbed as spontaneous poetry machines. You never know what else is possible once you follow for long enough the path of lucidity. With these two as your guides expect a laugh or two and maybe a typewritten poem, hand-crafted from the source of all that is make-believe. You won’t walk away empty-hearted that’s for sure.
