volume 1: poems for resistance
|
Description: Poets for Peace is a collective of artists spread out across the United States. We are unified by our recognition of artistic expression as a pathway to understanding, solidarity, and community. We mold ourselves into postures of peace to cultivate a receptiveness to communal transformation. This zine is a manifestation of that receptiveness and an acknowledgment of the turbulent waves of needed change washing over our friends, families, nations, and world.

All profits from the sale of these books will be donated to BIPOC organizations, bail funds, and other forms of mutual aid in the Philadelphia region and around the country. |
We stand in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and wish to amplify the voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color who can imagine a world beyond our current reality. A world where everyone may breathe regardless of the color of their skin, who they love, or how they choose to show up in this world. For that reason, any proceeds from this zine will be used to support BIPOC individuals, organizations, and communities striving to create safe and healing spaces made for them, by them through the many paths of protest.
Poetically, we created this zine so that those who cannot breathe can have a place to catch their breath. Practically, the information researched in this zine can educate those who want to better understand how carceral capitalism and systemic racism have terrorized the Black community throughout history -- leading to generations of trauma as well as generations of renegade healers to combat that trauma. That is to say, if you feel like you have lost your breath, this zine is an invitation to reclaim it. featuring writing by: Jay Morris, Kyky Renee Knight, Juan Camillo Garza, and Omar Pitras Waqar allied voices include: Marshall James Kavanaugh, Jeremy M. Brownlowe, Julia Daye, and Anthony Carson layout designed by Lawson Chambers published on July 17th, 2020 by Poets For Peace 28 pages. VIdeos:

As a follow-up to Vol. 1: Poems for Resistance, we felt called to shift our focus to the importance of resilience to grow through the burdens that weigh us down. For that reason we chose to articulate resilience through the symbolic language of flowers. What we know of flowers is that they transcend the burdens of burial to arise in light and thrive in their ultimate beauty. Consider the lotus and the common weed; one a symbol of inner peace and enlightenment, the other a reminder that we all carry the gift of breaking ground to claim our space in the world. featuring writing by: Javan Howard, Quentin The Poet, Lindo Yes, and Cashmere Harper allied voices include: Ludlow, Valore, and Marian McLaughlin infographic about POLICE BRUTALITY + RACIAL TRAUMA by Jay Morris cover designed by Lawson Chambers published on August 23rd, 2020 by Poets For Peace 28 pages.
